Search engine marketing also known as paid search or pay-per-click is the process of paying for sponsored ads on the search engines.  Google Adwords is the best known search engine marketing platform.  The ads on the right side of Google's SERPs (search engine results pages) and at the top of the google's SERPs are all paid for through Google Adwords.

The other two other major SEM platforms are Yahoo Search Marketing and Microsoft adCenter.  Search engine marketing allows new-comers to the Internet, as well as, companies that have been on the Internet for longer to pay for immediate, targeted traffic to their website.  Like most internet marketers, I recommend search engine marketing before search engine optimization, especially if you are just starting your business and have a small Internet budget.  Search engine optimization usually takes longer to see results.
